The Belk Tower plays music and the alma mater three times a day. It contains an electronic Carillion. I would assume the shape and height would better amplify the sounds, but I really don't know.

It's a dramatic carillon tower, that is, it is probably tuned to efficiently project the range of sounds produced by the electronic "bells." That's why it looks like an organ pipe.

Of course, whether I want to be perverted or not, I would say that it appears to be a monument to McDonalds. You see, it's a white straw! ...just like the ones McDonald's puts in your drink.

It actually looks like a gigantic organ pipe, like the ones in large churches. I know it chimes, so maybe that's it. Who knows?
