The Renaissance was centered in Italy because of trade. During that era, Italy was a major trading point for vessels sailing the Mediterranean. It was also the launch point for overland trading routes to the Orient. Advances in navigation and ship-building allowed ships to travel further than they ever had, and these ships brought back new ideas with their cargoes of spices. As the people were exposed to new ideas, they began to think more critically and generate ideas of their own. It completely changed world history. Without the Renaissance, the world would never have seen the Reformation and rise of secular government.
