Go to Volume Control again. Click on options then Advanced controls. Make sure nothing is muted. Then click on Options again and then go to PROPERTIES. Click on "Recordings" and then click OKAY. Click the ADVANCED button that shows up after you click Advanced Controls. Then check the box that says "MICROPHONE BOOST" and then click close and also make sure your microphone is not muted. Also make sure your microphone is selected. Click okay and then close everything.

Edit: You will need to raise the mic volume up in the RECORDINGS option to make the volume higher. If theres a lot static, then you might have something around your computer thats disrupting your headset. Make sure all magnetic objects are away from your computer and try reconnecting the headset again.

I had that problem with a headset/mic thing. Very irritating.
It seems that some microphones need to get power from the sound card, but not all sound cards provide it.

By sound card, I mean either of the built into the mobo or seperate kind.

How to fix: Different headset, or a new computer or sound card.
I considered wiring in a battery, but never got around to it.

Maybe you plugged incorrectly? check the source. Micraphone wire into red switch-plug and Headphone into green.
