I am the first and only person in my entire extended family to apply, get accepted, and register for college. I know my mom wants to help but she is clueless and does not know where to begin. I already know the basic things I will need when I leave in August, but what are some things you found useful, but never thought of taking in the first place when living on campus?

I was in the same boat when I started. My first tip to you is DON'T OVERPACK. Your dorm room will probably be pretty small, and you have to share the space with another person (or two, or whatever). You want to bring a reasonable amount of clothing, your bedding (not more than one spare set of sheets), towels (two, maybe three), your computer, toiletries, some basic cleaning supplies, a bath robe and a microwave-safe bowl or two.

Make sure you check with your roommate for things like a TV, refrigerator, microwave, etc. You also might want to consider getting an area rug because the floor is bare tile in most dorm rooms I've seen. Also look into those plastic stacks of drawers to put in your closet, because organization tools like that are handy.

And lastly, find out where there's a Walmart nearby so you can go get the stuff you forgot!

Here is what you will need: Long sheets (twin bed longs), a Quilt, bath towels and wash cloths, clothes hangers, soap, shampoo, personal sanitary items & toiletries, a few posters and some tape to put them up with, A MIRROR (many dorm rooms do NOT have one!), laundry detergent & fabric softener, a waste basket and trash bags, a laundry basket, a small refrigerator if you can get one, Baking Soda (some dorms stink! literally), Raid insect killer (many are infested with bugs), Lysol spray, a few pad locks or combo locks, and of course the things you'll need for class. I suggest you also bring a computer and a personal CD player, but there are plenty of computers to use on campus and a CD player is not necessary. I strongly recommend that you take a few bottles of tylenol, ibuprofen, and immodium with you! They are VERY expensive to buy on campus and you WILL need them (and so will your roommate). I also kept a Nalgene water bottle, which kept me from purchasing sodas all the time and depleting my funds! Also, buy some aqua socks or flip flops to wear in the showers, trust me you WILL need them! I wish you the very best.

An electric kettle! Since hotplates aren't allowed this little baby will boil hotdogs, eggs, heat water for ramen noodles and if it has an open enough top even make Mac'n'cheese! Of course a dorm fridge helps with the cooking bit. Another helpful thing I didn't think about right away was an answering machine since I was in my room less than expected, posters and stuff to make it feel homey and plastic shelving for all my books, binders and other stuff.

Congratulations! You and you family must be sooo proud! :)

First, you will want to contact your roomie to see what they might be bringing. That way you won't both bring the same stuff. The things that I took were:
mini-fridge
alarm clock
microwave
TV and DVD player (okay, so I took a VCR)
telephone and answering machine
small saucepan (for ramen noodles)
a plate, cup, silverware
lots of quarters!! (laundry)
mini m&m's tube (it is the perfect size to hold a whole roll of quarters and is easily kept with your laundry supplies

Hope that helps!! Good luck!

Flip flops! The showers are disgusting. You need to wear something on your feet in them.

Lock Box you can chain to your bed - Security is a HUGE issue in most dorms.

Something to make you popular on the first night. First impressions are HUGE. Bring something really cool to have fun with on the first night.

A computer, bedspreads(might want to check with your roommate-to-be), pillows, your clothes, some personal items(pictures, posters, etc.) and your personal hygiene items. Some people take a small refrigerator.
