Actually, they can prick the ear lobe...but most nurses will say they are only allowed to stick your finger.
The lobe is less painful for most people.

I assume you are talking about a situation where you are giving blood to the Red Cross (or some organization like that). If I am right, she is checking your blood for anemia. If you are anemic, she won't allow you to go forward with your blood donation, because it is hazardous to your health.
