A web bug is a 1 pixel image that is "clear" and will not be visually seen on a web page. It gets downloaded when you visit the website. It is used to track hits to a website and where the visitors came from.

Most websites can already track the visitors and where they come from by looking at the logs on the webserver. A web bug is often hosted by some third party to gather the same information, usually an advertiser.

Web bugs are not dangerous and do not live on your computer, but they can cause privacy issues. There are a few ways to disable them, such as setting yoru browser to not download images. There is also software you can download that specifically stops 1 pixel images from being downloaded.

If what you mean is gifs that are hidden in a web page and used to track users, you generally won't have them on your computer unless they are being cached in your temporary internet files.
