Is it just me, or have people become too interested in the lives and affairs of celebrities? If one conducted a random survey, he would no doubt find far more people that could name Tom Cruise's baby, Justin Timberlake's girlfriend, or the finalists of American Idol than they could their state senators/representatives or the like. Why are people's interests so out of whack, and has it always been this way, or is this a recent phenomenon?

I'm guilty of this stupidity myself. You're absolutely right and the only reason I can give is because what's happening in the real world is too upsetting to me so I lose myself in the lives of these "false people". Your question is thought provoking and I'm going to do some soul-searching. Thank you.

Pop culture is just that -popular. I think there's always been interest in glamorous or seemingly unobtainable lives. The paupers of Europe no doubt looked to the royals for daydreaming potential during their comparatively dreary lives. The slaves of Egypt thought the pharoah was a god - at least we're not THAT involved..... The unfortunate consequence is the indirect power these often undeserving people get. I mean, who cares what Susan Sarandon thinks about Bush or the war in Iraq? We should be more concerned about what our senators think, as we are responsible for keeping them in office or removing them. If we balance People magazine with Newsweek, we'll be just fine.

its recent, and yes. I think you are right. Its the fault of the media, and it seemed to have begun at about the time Dianna Princess of Wales was killed. For some reaswon the press seems to think thatwe all have to be involved in the minutae of celebrity lives, and it is just one more erosion of our rights.
I say, stop watching the reports, and encourage all your friends to do so as well. WE don't need reality tv, re need real life.
