its almost like, let's leave the women to do the 5 o'clock news and have the men do the more serious detailed 6 o'clock news,,,,,,at least on every network here in New York!

seems UNFAIR

Journalism is not blind. You never see a fat guy at the anchor's chair do you ?
Networks have learned that for a serious news cast about wars and disaster Male news anchors appear more authoritative and assertive (Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather). For fun, food, and fashion female anchors bring enthusiasm and energy (Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, The Today Show). It's just how society thinks, gender role stereotypes or not, TV always panders to the viewer. Don't blame the messenger.

There are still many backwards thinking stations out there that do not think viewers will watch the news if it is reported by 2 female anchors. I lost my chance to be a permanent anchor at a Fox affiliate because management felt that 2 females would not draw the audience that a male/female team would. I say, "Good for you, ladies!"

Katie Couric is the FIRST female solo anchor of a major network news broadcast. And it's 2006. So, I fear it will be a while before the women in local news break the glass ceiling.
