what people call "communism"... the governments of China and former Soviet Union were clearly dictatorships with a few social programs to keep up the sham...

Most people on the hard left are communists, and communism is a form of socialism. Obviously there is a difference between the European socialism of today and the Stalinism which marked the Soviet Union. You can't get away from this.
On the other hand, you have to stay away from labels which most people might not understand. There are those who would put Stalin on the Left and Hitler on the right. But they were both the same guy. Both governed and murdered essentially the same. And both of their systems were socialistic.
The only meaningful difference would be Soviet Communism with its government control of everything, and German corporate fascism which got the same results via near total control of its corporations.
For most Americans, both (these men & their systems) are bad, and they are right.

The ideal principles of socialist economic systems fall at the far "left" end of the liberal-conservative spectrum (speaking strictly of economic liberalism and conservatism, not social leanings). Of course, we have never seen an ACTUAL example of true communistic government. Marx predicted the need for totalitarian governments to control the nation after rebellion and slowly progress into true communism. Unfortunately, human nature kicks in, and those who have gained the power are unlikely to relinquish it.
The association between modern liberals and totalitarian Russia is based on two misundertandings: multiple uses of the term "liberal" (social vs. economic) and a lack of distinction between communism as a system of government and the way in which actual "communist" governments have historically governed.

Well from what I understand, standing in the bread lines came after capitalism had made every attempt to bring down communism.. to destroy it. I sometimes wonder why? What was the gain for a capitalist country to bring down a communist state? The only answer I can come up with is to open up their market to our RICH GREEDY corporations.. resulting in domination as they dominate us already.
I personally am a liberal and consider myself a marxist. I hate capitalism because I believe it breeds greed in our souls.

Because everyone is equal and sometimes the state has to enforce it by throwing you in a Gulag. So you starve for the good of the state. At least they are not being taken advantage of by the evil capitalist!

Liberalism is a disorder of the mind; it can't be cured. The only thing you can do is put up with their silly ways and try to not get angry when they say things that are so stupid even a 8 year old would know better>

okay, those things you described are not products of communism, only the brutal dictatorships that develop in a communist setting. communism is an incredibly liberal concept, because there is no private business, no competition, and only government-run businesses and utilities.

Communism is typically regarded as a far-left extreme version of liberalism whereas fascism is regarded as a far-right extreme of conservatism.

You just answered your own question. Liberalism is appeasing the communist form of government and is also a mental disorder.
