I hope you mean "one central idea", because in books there's not only "one idea" going on. In fact in good books there are intricacies of dialog and description as well as plot and the overall concept.

There's on one best way, but typical to have an idea that's 783 pages long you have to know what you're going to discuss in your story. The beauty of story telling is that you can talk about anything you want. But often times the best stuff isn't just one genre, it crosses many like you may start out with a western but end up with a western/action/comedy/satire.

What I've found to be successful in any case is that characters are the most important part of the story. This is where the bulk can go, into the present, past and possibly the future. Description can only go so far without being incredibly dull. (Like 15 pages worth of how a forest looks is WAY too much) And plot is the other bulk of the story, your characters' actions and what happens as a result. And once you write initially, you will have to go back and edit. This way your thoughts will come out clearer as well as adding and subtracting certain scenes, though you shouldn't try to push yourself for 700-odd pages. Let the story and the characters guide you to the end.

Intersperse the adventure chapters with mini-lectures. It worked for Herman Melville. Read Moby-Dick. Okay, that's not quite 783 pages.

Are you referring to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince? I think J.K. Rowling put several good ideas to work in that book.

As you write, your single idea blossoms and before you know it, you have a huge 783+ page manuscript.

I had a dream once that turned into a 640 page book.

I had another dream that I've managed to turn into at least a trilogy.

It just starts growing and takes a life of its own!
