Lag screws (heavy screws with bolt heads instead of slotted heads). They take no more time than nailing because you need fewer of them. Every hardware store carries a good selection of them, including long ones and they are inexpensive, just some 10 to 20 cents each. Just countersink a drill hole in the wood and then screw these in with a washer behind the head using a wrench. They go in nice and easy and provide such a strong fastening you will thank me forever for this advice.

Screws are the way to go with washers and use two nuts on the end. This is especially needed if this is a weight bearing post where a lot of stress is being exerted on the posts.

home improvement stores sell braces that fit over the end of each 4X4 and the brace can be nailed or screwed to the post.

Dowels are best but if you're looking for a quicker way, I'd use screws instead of nails. Nails don't have much grip and will pull apart.

Sounds good, I might use screws though. Down each side crossing over. Sounds like a complicated problem.
