7/8 + 3 1/4 = 7/8 + 13/4 = 7/8 + 26/8 = 33/8 = 4 1/8

5 1/9 - 2/3 = 46/9 - 2/3 = 46/9 - 6/9 = 40/9 = 4 4/9

None of them are 4, nor are they 4 1/2. I don't know how you got those.

(7/8) + (3 and 1/4) is closer to 4 than it is to 4 and 1/2.

(5 and 1/9) - (2/3) is closer to 4 and 1/2 than it is to 4.
