I am 31 weeks pregnant, and found out yesterday that the baby is breech.Does anyone know the odds of the baby turning to the head down position before 40 weeks. My Dr said she will do another ultrasound in 4 weeks, if there is no change I will reguire a c-section...I have had 2 normal deliveries and am very scared of having surgery.....

Thank you to everyone that answered...I have spoken with her about "turning" the baby, however, while doing the ultrasound the tech was unable to see the umbilical cord, so the fear of there being a "short cord" is there.I am willing to have a c-section, whatever is best for the baby.I am not worried about the scar.I have been married for over 16 yrs, and already have 2 children.I just wondered what the odds were.I found a website that suggests that 17% of 30wk gestational age babies are in the breech position. This will be my last pregnancy, as I plan to have a tubal ligation after the birth, I was just hoping I would be able to deliver this baby vaginally as well.
I will keep praying, and also I was told to get into our pool and have my husband assist me with standing on my head/hands...Sounds strange, but I am willing to give it a shot..
Thank you ,and many blessings to all!!

There is some chance that your baby gets cephalic by itself before your labour begins. However if it doesn't then the safest way for the baby is a Caesarean Section. Earlier they used to turn the baby but nowadays it is recommended to do a Caesarean section inorder to minimize the risks a baby has while delivery breech or physically rotated by the doctor.

During my maternity rotation, I noticed that C-Section is a very easy way for the mother till the baby is born. But after that there many be discomfort in stiches and you may become localized to bed for 1-2 days. And a scar is also a reason some woman fear C-Section. Its not bad to get a scar for saving your baby, you have nourished and carried for nine months? Is it? Modern drugs and theater care has proven C-Section to be painless and safe.

Although the best one for you may be a normal vaginal delivery, but not for your baby. Plus you will get rid of all the labour pains. This is the positive side of it. Think about it.

Good luck.

i've actually heard a lot of women that have success getting their baby to turn just by using the old idea of visualizing the baby turniung to the vertex postion. and at 31 weeks, you still hve more than 2 months and the baby could be flip-flopping everyday. i've had 4 c-sections and they are nothing to be afraid of...you would probably have the same medication for a vaginal delivery and the stories i've heard from women who have had both vaginal and c-section say it was easier to recover from the section. but i still think that a vaginal birth is better for you and your baby, so before you consent to the c-section because the baby is breech, ask your doctor to try turning the baby. it is not dangerous and is pretty successful. and see if you can possibly deliver the baby in the breech position. not all breeches require a c-section and some can be delivered naturally if you have enough pelvic room. good luck!!

I know how it feels to have your baby go breech on you. My little girl decided to go breech at 5 months and stayed there until deliver day. The doctors tried turning her at 7 months, 8 months and the day of deliver that turned her one more time hoping she would stay and finally she did. Which I was glad because if she didn't stay I would have had a c-section. She was taken 2 weeks early because I was just miserable and she still weighed 8 pounds and 19 1/2 inches long. Now she is almost 5 years old. I had her when I was 18. Good Luck everything will work out.

I don't know about the chances of the baby turning, but I had a breech pregnancy, and the doctor's turned the baby physically from the outside. One doctor pushed one way, the other pushed the other way. It did really hurt, but didn't last long. It probably does depend on where the umbilical cord is in relation to the baby. They did several ultrasounds afterwards every couple of days to make sure nothing got twisted or kinked. I hope all goes well for you either way, though.

I was scared when I found out that my baby was breech. I had a normal delivery and was expecting the same the second time but got throwing for a loop. The doctor tried to turn the baby which hurt cause it didn't work. So I had no choice but to do it. So we schedule a date and for a moment I thought well I won't have any contractions just go in and get it done. Wrong my water broke the night before and was dilated to 7 1/2 centimeter's by the time I made it to the hospital. Then I knew I had to choice but to have the c-section. WOW it wasn't as bad as I thought. The recovery I didn't like so much. Once you hold your baby you seem no to care how they came out. As long as you know they are healthy and you finally get to hold them.

I can't give percentages but I can share my experiences. My first two pregnancies were breech. My first child was delivered vaginally after 38.5 hours of labor. His head got stuck on my pelvis and he required resuscitation after his head was finally delivered with forceps. My second child was found to be breech at 36 weeks. My ob used External Cephalic Version to turn her at 37 weeks. I went to the hospital, was given a shot of Tributilin to relax my uterus, then the doctor turned her by pressing on my abdomen. It wasn't a pleasant experience but definitely better than my first delivery. My daughter was born 3 weeks later, perfectly healthy after an uncomplicated labor and delivery. Out of my four pregnancies, none have been c-sections. But I always said that if another of my babies had been breech I would have just opted for the c-section. Still, now you know that there is another option out there. The worst that can happen is you present it to you ob and she says she can't or won't do it.

My daughter was breech. They wanted to try turning her when I went into labor while she was still inside me. They said it was a possibility that the air supply could get cut off if the cord was damaged or something and she could be born retarded. I went and had the C-section. You can get really good drugs and you won't feel a thing but you can still be awake and see your baby.

I dont know the chances----read up on it though. You might also find out more information from some organizations that are 'Anti-C-section'. I had three sections and they all were fine---good healthy babies, mine was failure to progress---

I think that you have a good amount of time. Also there are natural ways that you can coax that babe to turn---pushing on it from the outside.....I hear it is not fun, but worth talking to the doctor about!!!

I don't know the odds, but I do know that your doctor is wrong and that you can have a normal vaginal birth with a breech baby. If your doctor is one of those who refuses to do this then seek out another doctor or midwife.

The best thing you can do to encourage the baby to turn itself is to walk - walk as much as you can as often as you can! You can also try talking the the baby to encourage it to move into position - I know this sounds fruity but if you believe in your heart that your baby can hear you and sense what you're suggesting - it can only help...

Best wishes to you! Get that gravity working for you!
