The biggest starfish are the sunflower starfish.they are found in a range of colours from purple to red, pink, brown, yellow, white, and orange. They can live up to eight years, and though they start out with only five, these giants can grow up to 24 arms by the time that they die. They grow to reach 1 metre in diameter! They can be observed on rocks, sand, and mud bottoms from the intertidal to depths over 30m. Ranging on the Pacific North West coast they have been observed all the way from Alaska to Southern California. While most starfish travel at speeds measured in inches per hour, the giant sunflower stars have been observed galloping along at nearly 2 feet a minute.

There are over 1,600 species of starfish. The largest starfish ever collected came from the southern Gulf of Mexico in 1968. It measured over 1.3m from tip to tip of its long, thin arms, but its body disc was only 2.6cm in diameter.
