When Johnson signed the Civil Right Act into Law he said "With this pen we have lost the Southern Democratic vote for 100 years.

I think it is time for the Red Necks to kiss and make up.

Southerners are not rednecks. That's a cliche and a lie. Some of the Southerners have already given up and just submitted to being under the rule of the north. Most haven't. And while Johnson may have thought he was doing a good thing, He didn't think far enough ahead. After losing the Civil War, was there not hatred and discontent abound? And giving blacks even more rights was bound to simply stifle the hatred for a few years. I lived in the South my whole life and there was nothing but animosity towards the northerners. But the blacks are hated because of the fact that they believe they can get a free ride off of welfare. That they should be respected while giving no respect to others. They want to be called african-americans, but they don't live in Africa! That it's the white man's fault that they as individuals are in the position they are in today. Don't blame me! Blame you mother and father! Make something of yourself! If you're dissatisfied, get your lazy a$$ off the couch and get a job! Save money for college! Do something other than complain!

And actually, the quote is as follows:

"I think we have just delivered the South to the Republican Party for a long time to come."

While I feel Johnson's words are not only short-sighted but also hurtful it is important to not dwell on our past. Today we are facing a racially-turbulent America and it will take an entire nation working towards a common goal to heal our communities.

Unfortionatly the efforts of hundreds or even thousands can be momentarily reversed by a violent act or cross word from the right person.
