Whenever you do the math operation, it comes out to a multiple of 9.
Now take a look at the symbols at the multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, etc. You'll notice that they are all the same symbol.
The program scambles the symbols each time, but always displays a multiple of 9 symbol. So, whatever number you pick, it "magically" knows which one it was.
This works because most people aren't particularly good at remembering these little designs and processing the information fast enough to see the pattern.
