Bluetooth is a wireless communications protocol. The benefits to having it are that, if your computer has bluetooth, you can use it to synchronize with your computer and even transfer photos, ringtones and video clips from and to your phone all without wires. If you do not need this feature, you can also use bluetooth to connect a hands free earphone to your phone and talk about 33 ft. (10meters) away from your phone. There are also many other features to numerous to fully explain. Here's a link to the wikipedia article explaining in more depth.

Bluetooth is a radio standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range (power class dependent: 1 meter, 10 meters, 100 meters) based around low-cost transceiver microchips in each device.
Bluetooth lets these devices communicate with each other when they are in range. The devices use a radio communications system, so they do not have to be in line of sight of each other, and can even be in other rooms, so long as the received power is high enough. As a result of different antenna designs, transmission path attenuations, and other variables, observed ranges are variable; however, transmission power levels must fall into one of three classes:

Bluetooth is a wireless radio system that extends the function of your cell phone and computer PDAs. If you've seen people running round with those Borg-like earpieces in their ears, that is a Bluetooth device.
Bluetooth creates what they call a 'personal area network' connecting all your techie toys that have it. I've seen it in cars, keyboards, mice, and especially cell phones.

Bluetooth is a short-range wireless connection that is common in mobile phones, computer mice, keyboards, etc. It is relatively slow in transfering data as opposed to WiFi, but works very well for voice and light data traffic.
Most often its used in mobile phones to connect to a wireless earpiece or to sync data with a computer.
It's very helpful if you do such things.

It is a wireless ear piece for a cell phone. You don't have to talk on the phone or on a wired headset. It allows you to dial by voice commands and also keep both hands free.
