When I moved into my apartment 2 years ago, it had painted countertops. I told my landlord and he said they would work just fine. As you can imagine, they are all scraped and chipped now even though I have been as gentle w/ themm as possible. My landlord refuses to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix it cheaply?

I have heard that Krylon plastic fusion spray paint is wonderful, and sticks to anything, and will not chip. I was actually getting ready to try this out on an old countertop I have in a rental.

As much as I dislike the concept of painted counter tops, I can see that you are attempting to stay within a budget, and there is an approach that will be reasonably effective.

Your only paint option is epoxy, and Lowe's has a product called Seal-Krete that sells for about $25.00/gallon. You are going to have to spend some time prepping the surface, getting rid of all loose paint, roughing up any smooth surfaces, and sanding or filling any pits, gouges and craters.

Seal the joints of the backsplash and around the sink with urethane caulk. 1 tube will probably do it, and this runs about $4.00.

This product is typically used on garage floors, and is highly durable. Try a small section first, to make sure it will not react to the existing surface, and that it bonds well. To create a smooth finish, I like to use a neoprene roller. Good luck and God bless you!

You can buy new countertop laminate (Home Depot) and peel off the old and replace with the new laminate. But I would only do this if your landlord will give you credit on your rent, at least enough to cover the materials.

Or you could just get a smaller chunk of countertop laminate and just lay it on top of the counter and work off that.

Nasty job, but you can sand the old paint off and repaint them. A note, painted countertops are merely a cheap way to get a good look for a short period of time. Check with discontinued laminates and install them yourself. DIY has great information on this.
