Probably, the patent office will consider your patent. But they do reject patents as not being original ideas or not requiring the protection of a patent.

Without knowing details, it's hard to say. You'll more than likely want to contact a patent attorney to be sure. But here are some resources that may assist you further.
To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent
NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what else the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

no, it must be 4 or more non-patented items to make a new patentable item. one exception is if you use 17 non-patented items to make a new item -- this would be non-patentable. however, any number of items from 4 to 16, and then from 18 on, would be patentable. a little known loophole, though, is if you somehow employ a 20-oz earthenware bowl into the contraption, any number of non-patented items may be combined to make any number of new patentable items. except for 17, that is.
