An iPod uses a hard drive for storage, can generally store many more songs, but is bigger and heavier (and more prone to breakage).
An iPod Nano uses flash memory, which is much smaller than a hard drive, so the Nano is much lighter, has no moving parts (so will not break as easily), but has the downside of less storage space.
If exercise, such as running, is important to you, the Nano would be the better choice.
