No, I wouldn't "encourage it". That would be almost like forcing them to play with a specific toy, wouldn't it? But if I had a little boy that saw a doll in the toy aisle that he wanted, I'd buy it for him. I think I know what you meant by asking this question, but the wording makes it seem as if you would sit there and FORCE the child to play with something, rather than just let the child play, ya know?

I think "encourage" might be a bit strong, but I certainly don't discourage my children from playing with each others' toys. I have a boy and girl (both preschool) that are two years apart. I don't think either of my kids are going to end up on Jerry Springer just because my son played Barbies with his sister or my daughter played Hot Wheels with her brother. I think people have a huge double standard in this area: it's okay for a girl to play with trains, but watch out if Johnny wants to play with Barbies. I think sexual orientation has very little to do with children's toys, don't you? ;)

I have 2 girls, and I typically do tend to get traditional "girl" toys - dolls, play kitchen, etc... But they also love cars and other "boy" things. My husband likes to work on cars, so my oldest wanted tools like daddy's and when he is out there, she gets her barbie car and uses her tools to fix it. But somehow it seems more acceptable for girls to play w/boy toys then vice versa, go figure. Let them play with what they like, it'll make them a more well-rounded person in the long run.

I have one daughter and I try to look for what she enjoys and encourage her to explore her own interests. She is 3 and plays with cars and trucks (boy toys) as well as her kitchen set and dolls (girl toys). We encourage her to be herself, not any predetermined stereotype so she can be better prepared to reach her full potential!

I've tried it. Have you ever seen little boys tearing the heads off of Barbie's and using them as guns? Do what you want, it doesn't matter anyway. It's not like you're going to screw them up with the "wrong toys."

i have two girls and they love to play with cars and trucks and dig in the dirt. in my opinion i think a child should play with what ever they feel comfortable with. like i believe a boy should play with a baby doll it will teach him to be loving and the characteristics of a good loving and caring person. not that they wouldn't anyway but they will learn it earlier in life.

Depends upon the age. I used to play with ninja turtle action figures when I was little and race cars.

Absolutely.
toys don't define a sex, so why should I limit my children?
I believe gender roles do more harm than good in today's society...
All the people above me are the idiots that perpetuate this idiotic cycle!
