My suggestion is that you don't let him near your furniture, I think that Rats have a consistent need for gnawing through thing because there teeth grow outward and downward, until they die. If they don't bite or chew away to keep there teeth level, I think they would die through starvation, they need there teeth to eat and those are tools for a rat that are in need of constant maintenance; The only thing that rats can't eat through but, it does wear down there teeth is steel wool, you might want to check with your vet to be sure it's safe...

It needs to chew on something to wear its teeth down. Rats' teeth keep growing forever, and if they're not worn down, they'll grow right through their cheek (happened to my rat. sigh). So whatever you do to deter it from chewing the furniture, make sure you give it something else to chew, like wood or something.

Try getting a scratching post. Or go to pet smart or any top pet store and ask about toys and such to keep him chewing. They may carry something that would help.

You should keep your eye on him when he is out and free in case he eats something that could make him sick. Rats naturally chew on anything.

He's 'cutting' his teeth, this is what they do to stop teeth from getting too long - he needs something hard and abrasive in his cage to chew !

A petstore must have something that averts them, they have it for dogs. Usually some tye of bitter or strong spice that comes in spray.
