Hmm...could it be that "New England" was a british settlement in colonial time. There for they would give names to their towns as english cities. Just like the person above stated. California uses mexican style names. Midwest uses German names. Heck, the fact there is a town in Texas called White Settlement should give you a clue as to what inspires town names.

Well New York is called that because it's easier to say than New Amsterdam... But it's not really Americans that do that. It was the British who came here and missed home so much they decided they would make this place just like home, and even with the same name. And only a few hundred years later did they decide they didn't like Britain so much any more.

Most of the places with names that are influenced by British cities were named before the revolution. Look at were these names are found, they are all located in the original 13 colonies.

Americans didn't make up the names, the British did when they owned this land and came over here and named it. That's why things are called "NEW" York, "NEW" Hampshire, and "NEW" England, because it was newer than the one they had back home in Britain.

New York was originally New Amsterdam and was named when the Dutch first settled here. New York was renamed when the Brittish bought it from the Dutch.
Other cities like that are named for similar reasons. (New Orleans for example)

The very first people who immigrated here did that. I suppose because they were breaking away from England, but still wanted to keep the name because they were proud of it.

For example: the first comunity lived in new york is from britain, so they named it like one of their motherland's cities.
