I'd say rugby too except for one thing:

...endurance over the long haul. Rugby players tend to have short careers, so you're not talking about enduring those hits and that kind of persistent pain over time. You look at someone like Yzerman, who just retired? Decades of hurt.

*Decades.*

You don't see that in rugby. You don't see some guy pushing (or past) 40, in the mix with 19 year olds, bringing the goods the same way he did at that age, getting the exact same punishment.

That's toughness.

Rugby short term, sure. But over a career? Hockey, hands down.

For just one game? Probably rugby players. If you figure in the schedule and frequency of games, then definitely hockey players.

Don't get me wrong, I love football, but they only play once a week for 4½ months (regular season). Hockey players play 2-4 times a week for 6 months (also regular season). Hockey players take far more punishment over the course of a year than football players do.

I played minor league hockey right after graduating high school, played high school football for all 4 years as a linebacker, and I played college rugby once I finished my hockey career.

Hockey is more physically demanding due to the shape you're expected to be in but Rugby has far tougher players.

I play hockey so hockey would be the toughest sport cause its the only team sport that allows fighting. I always have to watch out for my self evertime Im on the ice cause players tend to cheep shot you when ever they get the oppertunity. Also the UFC is the toughest in terms of individual sports.

hockey is the most toughest and most physical challenging game there is, American football most of players are over weight and would not stand a chance vs a hockey player, hockey players average in weight of about 200 to 230 lbs solid lbs not flab, and skate ten times faster then football players run and hit ten times harder. and the its rugby the 2nd toughest sport.

Rugby. Its football...without as many rules and, well, no pads. You have to be fairly mental to play (and I mean that in kind of a respectful way).

Hockey takes a lot of toughness, enduring everything from being checked to getting ice times at 5AM, but Rugby is just all out insanity.

I think hockey has the toughest players too. Sure, they tackle each other in football, but hockey players are more crazy and brutal! Soccer players and soccer fans are really crazy too.
