you should check magazine websites they usually have info about internships - interning is the best way to get your foot in the door unless you have a direct connection

You can probably intern at a magazine over the summer while you're in school. If you go to the websites of your favourite magazines you can find out if they have local offices and send them resumes...it's probably too late to get an internship for this year, but maybe next year.

As far as what you'd like to do as a career, you can take a look at FIT's course offerings and read the descriptions. Thay can tell you a lot about the kinds of jobs that are available in the fashion industry.

You'll probably need at least a bachelor's degree if you really want to get anywhere with existing companies, but you might also want to consider starting your own design firm, fashion consultancy or boutique.

I would first try and get an internship this summer. It may be hard because the fashion industry is in NY only (primarily) but if you have a local department store, a great place to start would be helping out in the merchandising department. For a paying job, work in a trendy boutique. In terms of long term career, there are really a couple of ways to work in the fashion industry:
Journalist/editor for a publication
Merchandiser/buyer
Stylist
Publicist
Retail
For colleges, look for a school that offers course suitable to many fields to give you a "taste" of each. Looking at trade schools such as Parsons School of Design or FIT is a great place to start.
