Asking for the cost without asking for the benefit is useless.
Lets first analyze whether or not it will be worth America's while to convert over to the metric system.
If the whole world will use only 1 measuring system, then the benefits of economics of scale for producing commodities and products will eventually be greater over the long term.

It's not a financial question, it's a social one.

In the 1970's the US govt tried to force everyone onto the metric system.

Gasoline was sold in liters, not gallons.
The result: nobody knew how much it cost, and everyone suspected the gas companies of skimming an extra couple of pennies from the confusion.

There are about 6million Km of highways in the US. If you assume that on an average there is one board that needs to be repainted/changed per Km of road there are 6million of them. If each change costs about $100 (assuming it can be automated to some extent) thats $600million right there. Add the logististics of it, and the total cost can easily come up in a few billions.

1 Galon is about 4 liters.
1 Mile is about 1.6 kilometers. (some cars like honda, or Alfa Romeo, have the both scales at the speedometers)
Maybe, you will change the temperature from farenheit to celcius, foot to meters, libras to kilos, and some more things.
but, don't worry, this is better than drive at the right side. ;)

America has already converted, its just not accepted by the general public and a lot of signs have km posted on them. To convert the rest of them would take a lot of money but I have no idea how much.
