This is not a joke, there is no punchline. I just have always wondered that.

This is not a lie--A girl came into our office yesterday, and actually struggled to get the door open. It's a glass door so we could see her pulling on the knob. We were saying, "push it open" and she didn't get it. Finally the receptionist got up and helped here open the door. The first words out of her mouth were, "Um, like I was wondering if you have any like job openings?" It was all I could do not to die laughing at her stupidity. Poor girl!

Because teenagers aren't completely 100% sure about anything and inserting 'like' gives them some wiggle room.

Example:
"There were like a thousand people there!"

They really have no idea how many people were there. Adding the 'like' translates to:

"There were a lot of people there."

Some of us do not use "like" as an interjection every other second; we use it occasionally. I think it's because the word is so deeply entrenched in teen culture and media that we all use it subconsciously. We're just so used to it already.

Because it gives people time to think of the next word they are going to say, because "like" is a similie and I'm pretty sure they aren't comparing what they say to something else

They say "like" because they can't complete a thought without pausing. Therefore, they supplement awkward pauses with the world "like" to create more time to complete their thought process.

Just a theory :)

When I was a teen I used to use that word ALL THE TIME!
My mother would always say "like what?" I outgrew it over time.
