A signature is a little standard e-mail ending that gives the person you send the email to information about who you are and includes your contact details.
It is much more common in companies etc than for personal e-mails. People working in companies will include their name, position and contact details in their signature.
There is no need to include a signature if you don't think it is useful and it has nothing to do with security!

YOu click on it if you want to send your signature which you can modify in your email options. You don't have to send a signature though. Some people just put their name, sometimes the signature might be a website. Often, people send their own link to their own site in their emails which you could do if you wanted.
But no you don;t have to click on the signature box to send the email, if that's what you mean.

You can add a signature to your e-mails if you like, I do, but it doesn't need to be your name it can be anything. It is one way for the person you are e-mailing to know for sure it came from you.

In your email settings, you can assign a signature that you put on every email! Like for example i could put
"Your Friend,
Ben"
at the end of every single email, i put that in the setting under the signature, and it automatically puts it at hte end of every single email! You can uncheck it if you dont want to put that for a certain email!
It comes in handy whenever you end emails the same, instead of typing the same thing at the end of every email, you make a signature and it puts it at the end of the email for you!

No, you don't need to click it, most people like to write a singnature at the end of their e-mails, but you can just type your name in if you want to.

email sigs give you a place to advertise your website, blog, give greetings to everyone or anything else you want to use it for.
some people will tell you that you can't use javascript in the email signature in the free yahoo email account. wanna bet? that's what they make iframes for :)
