The celebration involves a lot of people, fireworks, drumming and loud shouting singing. I'm too shy to ask as the area has some divisions in its culture (Manningham, Bradford) what is going on?

If this is a muslim wedding how long do they last? I'm getting married next month and i'm not planning a nine day celebration, is this the norm?

Its probably the Bradford Mela! It happens annually, a fun time for muslims and non muslims, whuch features food, music and parades. Go check it out; you're very welcome.

This is interesting. My Muslim in-laws live in Manningham, where I also lived for 2 years, and I'm not so sure what you mean.

If it is in the summer it is probably a wedding. Pakistanis make a major fuss about weddings and like to have fireworks and drumming to celebrate.

Eid ul Fitr, the Eid to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan, is on approx 24 October this year.
Eid ul Adha, the Eid to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham, is on approx 31 December this year.

Otherwise it could be Milad un Nabi, the Prophets' birthday, which is not technically an orthodox Islamic celebration but some groups like to do processions. This year it was April 11. Islamic dates follow the lunar calendar so move about 10 days back each year.

Of course any Islamic celebration should give due reverence to repecting others so if you have boy cruisers beeping their horns at 1am on Eid please be aware that is not from Islam.

As for those who have given retarded, Islamophobic answers about Muslims being terrorists, please do go back to your caves, thank you. Pretty much all Muslims are normal and decent people with no involvement in terrorism.

I can't believe the grief you're getting for asking this! ;-)

Have the courage to go and ask, show interest in the answer, and maybe help bridge some of those divisions. Most people would be pleased that some-one was interested enough to find out about other cultures & heritage.
