"Prohibition" just doesn't work. Banning tobacco would create a huge illegal market, just like it did for alcohol in the '20's, and like it does for drugs now.

You've gotten a couple of good answers so far. But the main reason the gov. doesn't ban smokes is because people who use cigarettes are addicted and will find butts underground. The outcome would be like trying to inforce prohabition in the '20s. Add that thinking to the money tobacco companies throw around, and lost tax revenues, there's no way congress is ever going to ban ciggs.

Why should we be a nannie state? What would be next for the "Do Gooders" food, sex, on ad naseum......
And as someone else has mentioned prohibitions fail and fail consistently. The problem would be an illicit and active underground economy that would make the "war on drugs" look like a walk in the park. I believe the war on drugs is a failure as well and should be stop. Legalize it all tax it and deal with treatment issues.
If people want to clog themselves up so be it. We should not pay for their medical care as taxpayers if they smoke PERIOD. Thats my solution.. I don't think we need to give our tax money to people that bent on self destruction but I also don't believe we need our government to tell people where and how to wipe their butts.
Government control of individual behavior goes against every bone of this libertarian's body. As long as someone is not infringing on my liberty, or life people should be allowed to do as they please...

Yes that's correct, it's all about money to be made. Along with high fructose corn syrup too and other crap ur body ain't suppose to be eating. See all those products in a drug store for sick people? The drug companies are more powerful than the US government!

Big tobacco is a huge industry and lobbies constantly, spending a lot of money to convince congress that it would be economiclly tragic if people stopped smoking.
Go rent, "Thank you for smoking". Very funny, and answers your question.
