I purchased a used 360 from gamestop after I sold them my gamecube and about a dozen games or so. Less than 150.00. So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed both the system, the xbox marketplace (so you can download demos if you have the hard drive), and several of the games. The only problem I've ever had with the system was a few of the used games I bought didn't work - the madden 06 and nba live 06, they worked for a bit, but went "unreadable".
I am a huge fan of the backward compatibility since the new 360 games are 60.00 a pop, halo 2 was about 35 and I think Black was 29. So far Blazing Angels and Need for Speed most wanted are the best games I've played. Black is a close third, Halo 2 is 4th, Call of Duty 2 is tied with Black. With video games, though, it is always a crapshoot because taste in games varies so much. Current games that have been just released look awesome, and I can't wait to try them. Prey has stunning graphics, though the demo wasn't very good, Chrome Hounds looks awesome - updated mechwarrior. Of course NCAA Football 07 comes out next week, so it will probably be my latest addiction :).

ps3 is a poor excuse for a console. its first showing at e3 (2005) just showed PRE-RENDERED images, not in game. at e3 (2006) the images were jumpy and of poor quality. Ps3 has a poor game line-up, an example of this is a breakdancing game! It stole the wii's controller, rushed the design (its bigger and uglier than the original x-box). Has had problems with the blu-ray disc, controller and the cost!
Buy the 360, as it has the best online gaming, the best line-up, including dead rising, halo 3, GTA 4, etc. It has better graphics that look amazing on normal tvs. It last longer than a plastic ps3, and looks amazing under your tv!
In fact buy BOTH the 360 and wii as this still costs the same as a ps3! wii is light years ahead when talking about innovation, 360 is a real gamers console, the ps3 is just a plastic pile of wires!
"Buy a 360 and a wii, forget the ps3"
Power To The Xbox!

so far it hasnt really lived up to the hype. the machine is a perfect example of the marketing power of microsoft. the first generation games havent really been that spectacular, but given time im sure they will improve. if you havent bought one and your mate has, just play his and maybe wait for the PS3.
