I would suggest having him wait until the PlayStation 3 comes out before even making a decision on which game he wants. It would be awful if you made up your mind to buy him the x-box and then the new PlayStation comes out and it is better or a better deal.
I think your idea of the gift card and making him earn the rest is a wonderful idea. It shows you care and want him to have the game but want him to have responsibility too. Plus it will mean more to him if he has to earn it.

You should make him earn half of it, that way it will mean more to him and he will value it more. Also, if you do not allow your son to play M rated games, a 360 may not be the best choice, since most of the good games on it are M. Don't get a PS3 for a few years, because it is going to cost $600. Nintendo is releasing a new console this November that will cost <$250, has a crazy motion sensitive controller, and is able to download games from every nintendo console. I suggest waiting for that (it's called the Wii ("we"), which symbolizes the fact that it is meant to bring people together to have fun)

The Xbox 360 is not worth buying and any console that costs over $200 I would have the child earn for himself. Get him the older Xbox or a PS2 or a PSP. Much cheaper. The PS3 will be $600 when it comes outs.

$400 isn't really a lot if you're not doing anything else. Last year I spent over $200 on my daughter's presents and about $150 on a birthday party for her friends. And the weekend of her birthday we went and saw a play, stayed at a hotel w/a pool and went to Camp Snoopy at the Mall of America. So compared to my daughter's last birthday, $400 is getting by pretty cheap!
My suggestion thought - Wait until Xmas and get him a PS3. It will support the new Blu-ray and play regular dvds.

first off the x-box 360 is a piece of crap!! well at least that's what my husband told me!! but if its what he really really really really wants, then you should get it for him, I mean its his birthday it isn't like you are spoiling him!! I would say you were spoiling him if you were just buying it for him because he's cute, but that isn't the case. so go ahead and get it for him if that's what he wants.. they only turn 15 once lol.

make him work for it (give him extra chores and such) to make sure that he'll appreciate it more. however if you don't want to give him chores you could get it for his bday as long as you don't just give him stuff for no reason.
