what would your response be if someone said this to you at work?

you are going along your merry way and have to give some information to some person, let's say person A. when you are done politely relaying information to A, she stops and asks you if "you were asleep when you were working on this design" in a condescending manner. i said, no, that was my first design, so it is bound to be messed up. then she goes off on a bunch of stuff i should have done but didn't because i didn't know at the time, but now i do, even before she went on her tirade.

mind you, i went through some of her first designs and they were effing terrible.

what would you say to the sleep comment?

no, she is not, she is my equal.

ps we don't have an HR department.

If I can do it this well while a sleep, think about what I could do while a wake.

Make sure everything you do from now on blows her terrible designs out of the water. Dedicate yourself. Your boss will notice that and give you more advances that they are going to give her. (I am vindictive what can i say?)

If all else fails, contact HR and let them know. That will shut her mouth up real quick.

I would just not say anything to her and report her comments directly to your HR department so they can reprimand her. Unprofessional attitudes like that don't belong in the workplace.
