The only dwarves that die (and are said to die in the text) are those who die in the expedition with Balin. Balin fell at the mirrormere while the other dwarves in the expedition are picked off until they make their last stand.

Do you mean in the Hobbit? As for Lord of the Rings, none of the dwarfs die within the plot, although there is some discussion of Thrain and Thror, Balin, and others from the Hobbit.

At least Thorin, Fili, and Kili die. The rest seemingly survive.

That depends on which dwaves are "the dwarves". There were dwarves all over the North Eastern part of middle earth past the Misty Mountains (At the mountain where Bilbo went in THE HOBBIT at the Lone Mountain. The king of the lone mountain, King Dain I think, died fighitng against orcs at the lone mountain. Overall though, the dwarves there won. All of the dwarves who were in Kaza-Dun (the cave under the mountain) died. It also seems that there dwarves deep in the Northern and Blue Mountains that did not get involved. Glimli, who was on the fellowship, did not die.

Dwarves are actually not involved much in the conflict that is in the Lord of the Rings. There are other places they live and like the Elves do not do much in the tale. Men have the central role.

No they do not all die. Sauron did send armies to attack them, but they all did not die. In the appendexes of the book Gimli was actually on the last boat that went off to the "Undying Land" because he and Gabrielle were such good friends which means that Gimli gets to live forever.

the dwarves of moria are wiped out by the balrog. there are other dwarves elsewhere in middle earth, some of their larger communities are mentioned in the body of the story. Gimli comes from the lonely mountain, the place that bilbo baggins traveled to in "the hobbit" before that, gimli lived in the iron hills. a long history of the dwarves known as durin's folk is given in one of the appendices to the lord of the rings, and the mythology of their creation is given in the silmarillion. you should really read these if you're interested in their story.

in the hobbit, bilbo travels with thirteen dwarves led by thorin oakenshield. the other twelve are balin, dwalin, oin, gloin (gimli's father), fili, kili, ori, dori, nori, bifur, bofur and bombur. fili, kili and thorin are killed in the hobbit during the battle of five armies. balin is the one who leads the colony attempting to re-settle in moria and is killed by the balrog. as far as i can remember, all of the others are still alive at the end of the lord of the rings.

gimli eventually leads a colony of dwarves to settle in the glittering caves, near helm's deep. (you may remember this place from the second film, where eowyn takes the women and children to hide from the battle.)

personally, the dwarves are my favorite characters in these books. they remind me of the Irish and the Jews, particularly because the diaspera of them led them to just as much great success (if not moreso) than they enjoyed in their homelands.

I am a big LOTR fan, and I do not remember--with the exception of Moria, which happened before the book takes place--the mention of dead dwarfs, period.
If it is Moria that you are talking about, however, yes, all of the Moria dwarves are dead by the time the Felloship arrives at the mine.

All the dwarfs died in that one mountain they passed through but there were other dwarf civilizations in other areas of middle earth that were not killed off. Gimli was from one of the later I think.
