A DJ that I know told me a rumor that built into all Windows operating systems after Windows 98, Microsoft (possibly as a result of a lawsuit) built a mechanism into the OS to reduce the sound quality of burned music CDs. Therefore, it is not an "exact" copy and they cannot be held liable for copywright infringement. I realize this sounds like a conspiracy theory, but CDs that I have burned on Windows XP do seem to sound flat to me. Has anyone else heard this rumor? Can anyone provide any more information?

Use Exact Audio Copy, and get the LAME compressor - it works with EAC and can automatically extract the songs to MP3 format. Works great. I use my computer to play music as a DJ so I don't have to carry around twenty binders of CDs

THe first link is to the program that copies the music from the CD to the hard drive. The second link is to the program that converts the wave file (expanded sound file) to an MP3 format and compresses it. The two programs work together.

I play the music from a Windows-XP laptop

yes it is a RUMOR any time you copy any type of media file from an original on a personel computer some its sound and/or video quality is lost because a pc does not have the tools to clear sound quality like proffesionall equiptment does

havn't heard anything like that. you might want to check your settings. cd quality mp3s are usually around 192k or higher, the higher the better quality but also the bigger file.
