VIN tells the whole story. Just call it in to a MB dealer service dept. The AMG name plate is an over the counter item for about 80.00. The AMG package can run 4500, to 12000.

First of all, a CLK430 isn't an AMG at all, it's the CLK55 AMG. From there, the first guarantee is under the engine hood. There should be a huge AMG written sideways on the top of the engine. Then, in the rear of the car (trunk), of course there should be the ////AMG logo as well as the wheels. And depending on the body kit, there should be the logo on the front bumper at the bottom of it at the center of the car.
Inside the car, on the gear shifter, there it should say CLK55.
Watch out, there are plenty of fakes and plenty of real ones made to look like normal CLK's

All the AMG models use 2 digit engine volume indications, while the normal M-B models use 3 digit. For instance, the C320 is a normal model (with a 3.2 l engine); the C55 is an AMG model (with a 5.5 l engine). So a CLK430 and CLK500 are normal models; the CLK55 and CLK65 (future) are AMG models.
Any car can be de-badged, so the lack of an AMG badge isn't necessarily an indicator. More subtle indicators are that the AMG models have a lower, more aggressive stance, and the brake calipers say "AMG" on them.

AMG is Mercedes Benze's performance division. If a Mercedes is AMG enhanced the model should change and AMG badging should be present. To provide and example a normal E Class could be an E320 or an E430 model designation. The designator for an AMG E Class is E55. The designators and badging should most obviously be on the lid to the boot or trunk. AMG may also place its logo on the wheels, interior and on the intake plentum in the engine compartment.

Its not an AMG if its a 430 unless the parts have been added on post-production. Most current AMG Mercedes cars are 550 though. Also usually there is an AMG badge on the boot lid, the sides and the wheels.

If it's an AMG, and it has not been debadged, it should say CLK43 AMG on the back. You should also look for various AMG badging around the car, a lower bodykit, and fat exhausts.

AMG is an important badge for Benz.
If one is an AMG it will be marked as such with Factory badges.

it'll have the little "AMG" badge somewhere on the outside (usually on the front fender, sometimes on the deck lid) and somewhere on the inside (usually on the steering wheel). it'll also have a bigger engine, extra body panels and snottier wheels... if you don't see this stuff, it's likely not been "worked over" by the folks at AMG.
good luck.
