I wouldn't say THE best but it comes close. The first half hour really crawls, but when it gets going it never lets up. As some one also pointed out, it's one of the few well acted sci-fi movies. For some sci-fi films, it's too easy to get bogged down in technospeak, but Cameron handled it well. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an oscar for her role in Aliens.

I've always thought Forbidden Planet from the 1950's was the best sci-fi movie. Based on the Tempest, it had a compelling storyline. And the special effects weren't too shabby either.

No Its good though, the best purely sci fi movie for the impact it had and influence over other film makers is The day the Earth stood still.

apart from your comment on star wars 4-6 which is sooooo right
as 1-3 sucked major (2 was prob the nearest to any thing worth being on celluloid), aliens is definitely up there and is the best of the 4 but do not forget the groundbreaking special effects from T2

For me, it is, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I remember seeing it at the cinema for the first time and the scene where the alien spaceship hovered over the table top mountain was awesome, the whole story came together with a terrific ending.

No, it's the second best. Alien is the best. They don't make sci-fi movies like they used to.

Aliens (the second in the series) is by far the best of the Alien series.
My favourite sci-fi film is Dni zatmeniya directed by Sokurov.
Outstanding : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095040/
though judging by the answers in this thread, no one will have heard of it. There is more to cinema than Hollywood.

While Aliens and Star Wars were fantastic, I also have to go with Flash Gordon and Battlefield Earth
