Piezoelectricity is the ability of crystals to generate a voltage in response to applied mechanical stress. The word is derived from the Greek piezein, which means to squeeze or press. The piezoelectric effect is reversible in that piezoelectric crystals, when subjected to an externally applied voltage, can change shape by a small amount. The deformation, about 0.1% of the original dimension in PZT, finds useful applications such as the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages, electronic frequency generation, microbalance, and ultra fine focusing of optical assemblies.

Piezoelectricity is the ability of crystals to generate a voltage in response to applied mechanical stress

I use the reverse of the application in my job.
I apply an electric chargge to the crystal to make it flex.

The size and cut of the crystal will determine the frequency of oscllation.

I have designed a few of these oscillators at 32,768 Hz
per second. If you divide 32,768 by 2 ( fifteen times) you will get one full oscillation a second. this is the basis of a clock circuit.

Crystals.

On a tangent- Epson printers use the piezoelectric effect to print. Instead of squeezing crystals to generate electricity, they apply electricity to crystals, which makes them expand. The expanding crystal squirts a little bit of ink out. Almost all other inkjet printers on the market are thermal- they use little resistors to heat the ink, making it expand and squirt out.

well it was discovered by the curie brothers in quartz (before Pierre married and joined Marie in pioneering research in radioactivity) and quartz is a crystal.
