My grandmother is my mother's mother or my father's mother--same as with anyone else.
Perhaps black people are more into extended families than white people are, so the grandmother would be more important. My "Nana", my mother's mother, came to our house often and we went to hers. Occasionally we'd spend the night or a few days there. She made the cakes for our birthdays and gave us cards with money for Christmas. We had a wonderful 100th birthday party for her in her church's community center. Some of us sang songs for her. She died when she was 101.
My father's mother died even before my father and mother met each other.
