I would tell my child:
See that footprint on Moon? That cost us only a few billion dollars, now aren't you hapy that we spent money on that rather than healthcare for 40 million Americans.

That's a good question. Hmm...Although it would be nice to somehow know what is out there, I don't think it's THAT important to our generation. I think the government should focus their funds more on finding the cure to diseases like AIDS. However, aren't some people talking about having colonization on Mars one day or something like that? So perhaps in the future when the earth's population gets out of hand then that can be beneficial. But that won't be a problem until a while from now.
Oh and sorry to say that i've never seen a full episode of star trek. My mom used to be a trekky though.

Well star trek doesn't signify the importance of space exploration so much as its popularity and what people hope may come from it. At this point space exploration has been important mainly in scientific terms. We have many new technologies that have been developed quickly because of the need for them in space travel. We also have anything that depends on satellites in part because of space travel.

Space is our future. Earth is the cradle of humanity, but no child can grow without leaving the cradle. Our space flight ability is not yet good enough to get us out of the cradle of Earth, but a baby's first steps are not good enough to walk to school either. If we just give up on space flight and say it is to expensive or difficult, it would be like a baby just giving up on walking.

I agree with the 2nd answerer. As far as Star Trek I hate it. Used to like it as a kid (the original) but never ever liked any of the newer versions.

We are going to need somewere to expand eventually, and we will need new sources of raw materials. Love star trek as a kid, not as much now.
