THEY can't and they know that. What they try to do is help the depressed person learn coping and identification skills so the patient can help themselves.
Psychiatrists also prescribe medications to help. Meds can be very helpful.
Don't ever be afraid of mental health professionals. They're just like any other doctor -- they're there to help and they can only help if you share all of your symptoms.

Often times the reason for the depression isn't obvious, even to the depressed. Talking it over with someone you don't know may bring out the root of the problem. When we talk with our friends and loved ones we there are points we avoid so as not to offend them or embarrass ourselves. When we talk to someone we don't know there is often a freedom to say what comes to mind. A professional is there to listen as we ramble on and most often that is all we need; problem is found and professional help can then counsel you on options for dealing with the problem you uncover.

Simple answer is because controlled experimental studies have been conducted, and certain forms of psychotherapy are highly effective in treating depression.
Some are more effective in the long run than medication.
In other words, we don't THINK they can help people who are depressed.
We've proven it.

Why do you think psychologists think they can help? Its all about getting you to talk so that you can figure it out yourself.... They can suggest medicine...or make suggestions..but you have to be open to let them help. And they really dont know what will work best, everyone is different..its all an experiment....

The good ones can. Meds help you not feel but they don't alway fix the problem. Some times it just helps to express you feels. Sometimes when you tell them something and they say it back to you it clicks.

That is how they make their living. They have to believe it.
Maybe they know they've helped others so they think they can do it again. They were taught in school techniques to help.
I recommend yoga instead of talk therapy.
