yeah, it depends on what you can personally cope with.....are you a wimp?, then don't bother!
i sometimes tell my clients, who find it painful to take a painkiller before their treatment. it also depends on your time of the month, as if you're due on, you are generally more sensitive to pain and discomfort!

I've heard that it hurts. I've also heard that if your labia ( lips) aren't really smooth and tight then they can be torn when the hair is removed.

not at all. When you get it and it does hurt just distract yourself because it is so worth it......................
