Namaste,

Well, monsoon brings the message of joy and romance for all the Indians. After the scorching summer heat of May and June, monsoon sets foot in India in the early weeks of July and languishes here till the end of September or sometimes the early weeks of October.

I'll list a few points here as to why the monsoon is so significant for the Indian populace:

1- Monsoon dependent agricultural infrastructure and agro-industries.

Indian agriculture is highly dependent on monsoon due to lack of improper handling of irrigation resources. A delayed monsoon can turn around the whole Indian economy.
The Kharif crops (Autumn crops) like Rice, Millet, pigeon-pea, barley etc are sown at the onset of monsoon season and are reaped in the month of November.

Here are a few links that might provide you with some information about Indian Agriculture and its dependence on Monsoon:

2- Driving away the summer heat.

Indian summer is famous for its atrocious nature. The months of May and June leave the Indian soil dry and baked & the people thirsy and panting. The first raindrop of the season on one's forehead feels like a heavenly bliss. The underground water table in some places drops down to unimaginable depths and a few north-Indian villages even face severe famines.
Monsoon is a welcome change from such a season, don't you think?

3- Literature.

Yes, Monsoon has been the favourite topic for Indian poets and writers. The season of monsoon symbolizes the season of romance and beauty.
Human emotions are soaring high as the poet sees lovers enjoy the nature, peacocks dance, animals mate and clouds embrace the earth in their arms. Monsoon is also the season when those who are separeted from their loved ones miss their company.

As the tears of longing are guised under the raindrops, the poetic mind is compelled to pen down its emotions on a piece of paper. The famous epic called "Meghdoot" (The messenger cloud) was written by Kalidasa with the exact same emotions.
