In short, YES. To use any messenger or any other internet program, you must be online first. It's like a telephone call made by a computer, you can't talk to anyone unless you first pick up the phone. BUT !!! You do NOT have to use AOL to use AIM!

Might I also suggest Yahoo! Messenger? I also know how to block the ads at the bottom of the chatrooms SHH!! Just ask. :)

of course you need internet to use aim. don't you have internet in your house though?

yes aim runs on internet... basically everything runs on internet exept for somethings. any type of messenger or mail box runs on internet.

No you don't technically, but you can't chat or do anything it just opens and tells you that it can't sign on for you
