On Nov. 8, 1970, Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints struck a 63 yard field goal on the last play of the game to give the Saints a 19-17 victory over the Detroit Lions. Dempsey was born with a defect that caused him to have no toes on his kicking foot and only three fingers protruding fro the end of his right arm. Because having no toes made the front of his foot flat (perfect for kicking a football in the straight-on style), he was deadly in range and accuracy. He required a special shoe for his foot because regular shoes wouldn't fit him and at the time, the league required them to be worn. Despite the protests of a couple of other teams (they felt the special shoe gave him an unfair advantage) he was allowed to kick with the shoe because the rule that said only stock equipment available for retail sale couldn't apply to him and therefore would be seen as discriminatory if he was not allowed to kick with a special shoe. In 1999, Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos kicked a record-tying 63 yarder in a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both Dempsey's and Elam's game-winning shoes are on display in Canton, Ohio at the Pro Football hall of Fame. Even though it didn't count, a World League of American Football player that was allocated to Denver in 2003 named Ola Kimrin kicked a 65 yard field goal in an exhibition game that season. Kimrin eventually wound up with the Washington Redskins.
