It's not Georgette Heyer - honestly! I've read all her romances several times. No Heyer heroine wears spectacles. There are one or two incidences where one of her younger, high-spirited girls mistakenly goes to a masked ball with a rogue, but all is sorted out in the author's inimitable fashion. "Devil'sCub", following the fortunes of the wild son of the Duke and Duchess of Avon, marries the more refined sister of a low-class girl while drunk, and recklessly whisks her off to France. He comes to love her and all is put to rights at the end. That's the only one that I can think of. Another girl is won in a game of hazard (I think) in one of the short stories. There are many plots and sub-plots in Heyer's books, but this really doesn't ring a bell. Oh, and there is "A Civil Contract", where an impoverished Viscount is reduced to marrying the daughter of a millionaire tradesman (anathema to the "ton" in those days), but the progress of their relationship is described with refinement according to the moral and social mores of the period.
Sorry, I don't recognize the story. But I hope the above helps.
