It is the Appalachian Mountains. Actually, geographically, the range can be said to extend beyond the United States into Canada, and along the the Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland arc into the British Isles. I remember being in Wales and how it reminded me of the moutains of Virginia, where I grew up.
By the way, Georgia to Maine was probably selected because of the Appalachain Trail, which has its terminuses in these states. However, the mountain range does include northeastern Alabama.

The Appalachian Range is the only one. However, it is composed of smaller mountain chains including the Smokies, Blue Ridge, and Allegheny chains.

It's actually the Blue Ridge mountains, but people that have not really learned anything about our mountain ranges would call them the appalaichans. Virginia is one of the only states that calls them by their real name anymore, depending on where you learned about your mountains you will hear them called different names, but Blue Ridge is the correct name.
