Usually the wax and paper bag or paper towel method takes a while. You must make sure you get all excess off before you start so grab some ice-cubes and freeze it and get a butter knife and scrape off the excess while it is frozen if it starts to get soft while scraping then you can reapply the ice to freeze... just put the ice in a Ziploc if you don't want the carpet wet. However the water from the ice may help with removing color. You may never be able to get it all out.

Another alternative is candle wax remover. Harder to find but works great.

If you have any scrap pieces of carpet, you can cut out the section of carpet and patch it with the scrap. Some people have suggested using WD-40 as a solvent to remove the wax, but I haven't tried it. Finally, you can always replace!

My favorite is the papertowel and hot pan trick. Unlike the iron, you dont have to watch it and the weight of the pan pushes harder on the spot to ubsorb more.
