Unfortunately they can attend college here and at most state schools, the U.S. taxpayer picks up the tab. And it's spelled "college" by the way.

My suggestion for you would be not to give up! There's many help out there and you or your friend shouldn't give up, this is an obstacle to confront, that's why you should look for help because everything is possible to achieve in life! Hoever, you can still attend to a community college, find information, other resources and ask questions because that's helpful. Even though you don't have papers, you can still attend college. When I visit Fresno Pacific for the first time, a student told me that she didn't have papers, but she had desire of success and wanted to continue her education! She also had great gardes, that's why she was accepted!! So I encourage you to keep looking for other alternatives and don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you may nee, you will also succeed! take care, and if you want to visit Fresno Pacific University, write me back so I can tell you what you can do or you can visit the school's website, which is: fpu.edu
You can also be a triumphant in life, okkk don't be afraid, have courage in God and you'll see how he manages to solve any problem or situation you have!!

I don't know if that's true about community colleges, but I think you can ask to have an ID number assigned to you that is not your social security number. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't qualify for any kind of federal or even private scholarships, but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to attend college unless you're here illegally. And even then, I'll bet there's a way to do it. If you've got a college in mind, talk to the Admissions Office.

Generally speaking, immigrants need at least a student visa to go to college in the U.S. However, some colleges are lax about checking visas and foreigners get past the requirements that way. Also, they have to pay higher tuitions, usually, than do citizens of this country.

You can always join community colleges. They don't require SSN.
