Some places have home-owner's agreements. Check to see what limitations are made in your area--fence height, etc. My favorite type of privacy screening isn't a fence at all, but rather a living screen. Bamboo, evergreens, oleander or espaliered fruit trees make excellent screening for privacy. They may also be more cost-effective and reach higher than a regular fence.
Did you know many trees such as mulberry, yew and juniper may be used as a hedge? Of course some of these require regular pruning ...
If you already have a fence in place--such as chain link style, consider a climbing vine for screening. Roses, clematis, honeysuckle and bittersweet are just a few choices available.
You can enhance your screen by installing metal, wood or plastic slats available at any home improvement center. They will thread right through chain link squares. Cost varies for materials and colors might be limited.
